Biopolymer protective systems

for environment, landscape and infrastructure

What we do

Biopolymer Solutions GmbH develops and supplies nature-based polymer systems and individual products – for defined protective and functional layers in the landscape and infrastructure sector as well as in soil protection. Our solutions are user-friendly protection systems for landscapes, soil, and technical exterior surfaces and are designed so that specialist contractors can implement them safely and efficiently under real-world conditions.

The focus lies on the targeted combination of biopolymer-based raw materials with mineral components, organic fiber materials, and functional additives into clearly defined material systems. The development is based on an understanding of geological, plant physiological, and physical processes and is translated into technically documented formulations, layer logics, and application specifications.

engineered by nature is for us not just a marketing slogan, but a development principle: nature-inspired mechanisms of action are translated into engineered, validated, and practical protection systems for environmental and landscape applications.

In the open landscape, classical chemical approaches are de facto ruled out for many applications – be it due to regulatory requirements, environmental stipulations, or a lack of acceptance. Nature-based polymer systems are therefore the reliable path to permanently combine performance with regulatory compliance and environmental requirements at the EU and global level.

Based on this, we supply ready-to-use systems and individual products – ranging from binder concentrates and functional powders and granules to sprayable and pourable formulations as well as defined layer systems. For implementation in the field, we provide standardized application specifications, defined process windows, and parameter guidelines – tailored to the material, substrate, equipment technology (hydroseeder/polymer sprayers), and desired effect. At their core, these are sprayable, biopolymer-based combinations of binders, mineral components and, depending on the application, fiber and functional additives.

Typical Application Examples

  • Dust control and particle management on dry, open areas: construction site logistics, site roads, storage yards, transshipment zones
  • Surface stabilization on raw soil and loose material surfaces: fixing fines, reducing erosion, making surfaces more load-bearing
  • Covering without plastic sheeting: sprayable protective layer for soil mounds and interim storage as an alternative to plastic sheeting and tarps; reduces wind exposure, precipitation ingress, and material loss – without plastic waste and handling effort
  • Erosion control and sediment management on slopes, embankments, landfill, and reclamation areas: sprayable protective matrix for immediate surface binding
  • Emission reduction on contaminated, sensitive, or emission-relevant storage and transshipment areas: defined surface management, e.g., for fine mineral goods
  • Snow depot preservation: sprayable systems for targeted management of surface, energy, and moisture balance over summer periods
  • Wildfire prevention: areal, sprayable protection systems with a biological-physical mode of action, e.g., through adhesive layer formation, mineral-supported thermal shielding, and moisture and heat management on vegetation surfaces
  • Fire protection in agricultural buildings: sprayable, animal-compatible protection systems for risk reduction in animal areas (e.g., barn and stable zones) – designed for use in environments with organic material, dust contamination, and potential ignition sources; hay and bedding areas are also covered.

Excerpt from our portfolio

The systems we have developed combine biopolymer-based raw materials with tailored combinations of binders, fillers, and application methods. Current development focuses on the following application areas:

Fouling suppression & surface stabilization

Polymer systems for the targeted suppression of vegetation and the stabilization of vegetation-free or only temporarily used areas. Through film formation and adhesion, functional layers with a defined duration of action are created, which protect surfaces from erosion, inhibit the germination and establishment of unwanted vegetation by reducing light transmission (UV/photosynthesis-relevant radiation) and by limiting water availability in the vegetation layer, and simultaneously increase the shear strength of the surface.

Soil protection & erosion control

Systems for raw soils, slopes, and engineered surfaces where erosion, erosion, or particle redistribution needs to be reduced. The polymer layers bond to soil particles, increase surface cohesion, and can be combined with mineral and fibrous components to form multi-layered protective systems.

Snow preservation & surface cooling

Nature-based polymer layers that influence the energy and moisture balance of snow and ice surfaces. The aim is to reduce melting rates, adapt surface reflection, and precisely control the exchange processes between snow, air, and radiation. This area is under continuous development and is validated through pilot projects and comparative trials.

Preventive, area-wide fire protection systems

Biopolymer systems that can be applied over large areas for the preventive treatment of vegetation and landscape areas with increased fire exposure. The systems are designed to form surface films and zones that influence ignition readiness, fire progression, and heat transfer. The focus is on nature-based raw materials, defined duration of effectiveness, and recyclability or biodegradability after the critical phase.

Cooperation and independent validation

Biopolymer Solutions GmbH collaborates with independent testing laboratories, universities, and research institutions to ensure that development work adheres to recognized standards. Testing includes, among other things, material properties, layer behavior, biological activity, degradation behavior, environmental interaction, and long-term stability under field conditions.

Cooperation with industrial companies and public authorities enables the transfer of validated systems to various application scenarios. Results from these applications are systematically incorporated into the further development of material systems, system solutions, and application technology.
