Application Field
Dust & Particle Control
Dust emission is simultaneously a traffic, occupational safety and environmental problem. Continuous wetting consumes resources and is not a sustainable answer. BPS develops nature-based binder systems that permanently fix, encrust or frost-flexibly stabilise dust particles — without synthetic polymers, without removal effort.
Problem Frame
Dust is not a comfort problem — it is a safety and liability issue
On construction sites, the control of dust emissions is legally mandated. The TA Luft and TRGS 559 define limit values and protection obligations towards the surrounding area and personnel working on the site. The common response — continuous wetting by water trucks — ties up considerable capacity, requires continuous personnel deployment and achieves no lasting effect. As soon as the moisture evaporates, the problem returns.
Airport sites are particularly sensitive for safety reasons: airborne particles endanger engines and reduce visibility. On coasts and in dune areas, uncontrolled sand transport leads to infrastructure damage and ecological impairment. Onshore wind turbines are frequently constructed on sandy or low-cohesion soils — dust control is part of the construction site logistics and permit conditions.
In the hotel, leisure and path surfacing sector, dust control is a quality and comfort issue — while at the same time water-bound and unbound path surfaces place high demands on system flexibility, especially during freeze-thaw cycles.
Target Segments
Six deployment scenarios — one system portfolio
Dust control is not a uniform task. The requirements for durability, ecology, regulation and aesthetics differ considerably depending on the deployment context. The following portfolio addresses six defined scenarios with the respectively suitable system variants.
Construction Sites
Dust emission protection towards the surroundings and personnel. Legal obligation under TA Luft and TRGS 559. Continuous wetting replaceable by a single binding treatment.
Airport Sites
Particle entrainment endangers engines and reduces visibility. Dust control on unpaved peripheral areas, taxiways and construction fields is safety-critical.
Coast & Dunes
Uncontrolled sand transport by wind leads to infrastructure damage, vegetation loss and ecological impairment. Nature-based binding without interference with nature conservation law.
Onshore Wind Power
Wind turbines are constructed on sandy, low-cohesion soils. Dust control is part of the construction site logistics and frequently part of BImSchG permit conditions.
Traffic & Construction Roads
Airborne dust on construction roads and access routes endangers traffic safety and residents. Short-term sealing or permanent stabilisation depending on usage duration.
Hotel, Leisure & Path Surfaces
Water-bound and unbound path surfaces in leisure facilities require low-dust, visually appealing surfaces — with simultaneous flexibility for freeze-thaw cycles.
Systems
Three working principles — matched to deployment duration and site conditions
The three system variants address different requirements for durability, flexibility and substrate. Selection is based on deployment duration, substrate, loading and climatic conditions.
Wirkprinzip
Surface-sealing dust control through film-forming biopolymer formulation. The binding layer fixes particles on the surface and prevents entrainment by wind and mechanical loading. Effect duration short-term to medium-term, depending on weather and loading intensity.
Suitable for situations where rapid, temporary dust control with minimal application effort is required. No removal requirement, no hazardous reaction under water influence.
Primäre Einsatzfälle
Construction sites — temporary dust control during construction phase
Airport sites — unpaved peripheral areas and construction fields
Traffic and construction roads — short-term sealing
Onshore wind power — construction site protection on sandy soils
Wirkprinzip
Crust stabilisation through mineral-biopolymer composite. The system forms a stable, continuous crust layer on the surface that permanently binds particles and is resistant to mechanical stress. Effect duration long-term, even under elevated wind loads and vehicular traffic.
For surfaces with permanent dust control requirements without removal obligation. Fully biodegradable after the end of the use phase.
Primäre Einsatzfälle
Coast and dunes — permanently bind sand transport
Airport sites — permanent peripheral areas and taxiways
Hotel and leisure — water-bound path surfaces
Landfills and contaminated sites — surface stabilisation
Wirkprinzip
Frost-flexible stabilisation through elastic binder matrix. Unlike rigid binding systems, Flex permits volumetric expansion of the substrate under frost — the binding layer follows the movement without cracking. After the thaw cycle, function is fully retained.
Developed for applications with alternating freeze-thaw conditions, especially water-bound and unbound path surfaces in leisure facilities, hotel complexes and public green areas.
Primäre Einsatzfälle
Water-bound path surfaces in freeze-thaw locations
Unbound path surfaces in leisure facilities
Coastal and dune areas with winter conditions
Onshore wind power in alpine or northern German locations

Regulatory Framework
Legal requirements for dust emission control
Dust emission control is regulated in Germany and Austria. The following overview shows the relevant frameworks and their significance for system selection.
Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control
Defines requirements for limiting diffuse dust emissions on construction sites, landfills and industrial areas. Dust control measures are explicitly recognised as state of the art.
Technical Rule for Hazardous Substances — Mineral Dust
Protective measures against quartz-containing dusts in the workplace. Continuous wetting is a recognised but resource-intensive measure — binder systems eligible for recognition as an equivalent alternative.
Federal Immission Control Act
Protection against harmful environmental effects from air pollution. Relevant for installations requiring permits such as wind turbines, gravel works and landfills — dust reduction as a permit condition.
International Civil Aviation — Aerodrome Standards
Requirements for surface condition and particle control on airport sites. Unpaved areas in the safety zone must be kept free of particles capable of entrainment.
Austrian Standard — Road and Path Construction
Requirements for water-bound and unbound path surfaces. Dust control and surface stabilisation as a defined quality criterion for public and private traffic surfaces.
Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive of the EU
Protection of natural habitats — relevant for coastal and dune areas. Nature-based dust control systems without synthetic polymers are ecologically safe and permit-compliant.
Dust control in the context of European research programmes
Nature-based dust control systems without synthetic polymers are directly relevant for EU funding programmes in the areas of air quality, soil protection and circular economy. BPS contributes validated formulation technology and regulatory documentation competence to project consortia.
