BPS as Technology Partner in EU Project Consortia
Nature-based system solutions for soil, vegetation, surfaces and climate are explicitly eligible for funding under several EU programmes. As a technology partner, BPS contributes validated formulation expertise, simulation capacity and operational field experience to consortia — and supports consortium leaders in formulating robust technological exploitation components.
What BPS Brings
Three Contributions — One Technology Partner
EU-funded projects in the field of nature-based solutions require partners who deliver not just concepts but technologically robust contributions — with demonstrable expertise, operational experience and the ability to document and exploit results. BPS covers three of these core contributions.
Formulation Technology
BPS has developed a system family of nature-based formulations for soil, surfaces, vegetation, thermal management and particle control. These formulations are field-tested, documented and scalable in principle.
→System family spanning multiple application fields
→No synthetic polymers — fully biodegradable
→Documented raw material basis and formulation parameters
→Scalable from pilot batch to field scale
Simulation Capacity
BPS has developed a simulation framework that models rheological behaviour, layer formation, degradation kinetics and substrate interaction — under defined laboratory and field conditions. This demonstrably reduces field testing effort and shortens development cycles.
→System simulation before field testing — documented process
→Rheological characterisation and degradation kinetics
→Substrate-formulation interactions can be modelled
→Reproducible and documented in a manner comprehensible to third parties
Operational Field Feedback
BPS does not operate exclusively in the laboratory. All developed systems are tested under real-world conditions — across different climate zones, on different substrates, with different application techniques. This field feedback constitutes an independent scientific contribution.
→Field trials documented across multiple continents
→Real climate conditions — from alpine settings to the MENA region
→Application engineering documentation and protocols
→Foundation for scientific exploitation and publication
Relevant Programmes
Funding Frameworks Directly Relevant to BPS Technologies
The following programmes explicitly address nature-based solutions, climate adaptation, circular economy or regional development — thematic areas where BPS systems can make a direct technological contribution.
Horizon Europe
The largest EU framework programme for research and innovation, with a budget of nearly EUR 96 billion for 2021-2027. Cluster 6 (Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources) and Cluster 5 (Climate, Energy, Mobility) are directly relevant to BPS technologies.
LIFE Programme
The EU funding programme for environment, nature and climate protection with a focus on demonstration projects. Four sub-programmes: Nature & Biodiversity, Circular Economy & Quality of Life, Climate Mitigation & Adaptation, Clean Energy. Typical project durations of 3-5 years.
ERDF / Interreg
The European Regional Development Fund and the Interreg programme support cross-border cooperation. Particularly relevant for BPS: Interreg Alpine Space and Interreg Central Europe — both with a focus on climate resilience, natural hazards and sustainable land use.
FFG — Austrian Research Promotion Agency
The FFG promotes applied research and development in Austria. Programmes relevant to BPS: Bridge (science-industry cooperation), Production of the Future and the base programme for SME-led R&D projects. High funding rates for small enterprises.
Austrian Climate Fund
The Climate and Energy Fund supports projects to achieve Austrian climate targets. Call lines on climate change adaptation, natural hazard management and land use are directly relevant to BPS. Both demonstration and research projects are funded.
BMBF / BMUV Specialist Programmes
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Ministry for the Environment fund applied projects in the areas of bioeconomy, nature conservation and resource efficiency. SR Begrünungstechnik GmbH as a German sister company provides direct access to German funding programmes.
Thematic Fit
BPS Systems in EU Funding Topics
The BPS system family covers several EU funding priorities — not as a peripheral topic, but as a technological core. The following overview shows which systems can be contributed as exploitation components in which funding topics.
Climate Adaptation & Natural Hazards
Erosion control after extreme events, snow conservation as a tourism measure, vegetation establishment under changing precipitation patterns.
Biodiversity & Nature-based Solutions
Nature-based slope stabilisation without synthetic polymers, restoration of degraded sites, environmentally compatible dust suppression in protected areas.
Circular Economy & Bioeconomy
Use of secondary raw materials and organic residues in system formulations, biodegradability as a design principle, avoidance of persistent plastics.
Air Quality & Emission Reduction
Dust suppression on construction sites and transport infrastructure, particle reduction at airports and industrial facilities, nature-based alternatives to water-based wet processes.
Water Protection & WFD
Sediment control at construction sites and transport infrastructure, bank stabilisation without cement-based systems, reduction of fertiliser and PPP leaching through early vegetation establishment.
Disaster Protection & Wildfire
Biodegradable fire protection formulations for vegetated areas, aerial application by helicopter, environmentally compatible formulations for protected and wilderness areas.
Cooperation Process
From Project Idea to Consortium Participation
BPS ideally joins a project proposal early — before the technological exploitation components have been finalised. The earlier BPS is involved, the better the technological contribution can be aligned with the funding logic of the respective programme.
Initial Contact & Topic Alignment
Brief description of the project idea and the intended funding programme. BPS assesses which systems and competencies can be contributed as a technology component and provides an initial assessment of fit.
Formulate Technology Contribution
BPS supports the formulation of the technological exploitation component in the proposal — with concrete descriptions of the systems contributed, simulation capacities and field feedback data. No vague technology promises, but verifiable contributions.
Consortium Agreement
Definition of role, work package responsibility, IP arrangements and exploitation rights. BPS joins as a technology partner — not as consortium leader. Clear delineation of contributions from the outset.
Project Execution & Documentation
BPS takes on the agreed work packages — formulation development, simulation, field trials, monitoring. Results are documented to funding standards and prepared for reports and publications.
Project idea — we assess the fit.
Briefly describe the intended funding programme and its thematic focus. BPS will provide an initial assessment of whether and how a technology partnership makes sense — without obligation.
